Herrings in the Gypsy style
Lemon ginger tea.
The first Christmas trend.
Candles on the table.
After the sweet cake, I change my taste 180 degrees to salty herring :) We are not fans of herring; maybe because we rarely prepare it. However, when I came across this recipe for herring in the gypsy style in the magazine Moje Gotowanie 12/2016, I really wanted to make it. The pickled and sweet additions contrast beautifully but also complement the taste of the herring. If you like herring, you should definitely prepare a portion of this herring :)Ingredients:
- 4 large fillets of salted herring
- 1 medium jar of pickled cucumbers
- 1 small jar of pickled mushrooms
- 1 red onion
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 cup hot ketchup
- 2 teaspoons hot mustard
- 3 cloves of garlic
- Salt, pepper, sugar
- Milk
Soak the herring in milk for an hour. Peel the onion and cut it into slices. Sprinkle with salt and set aside for 20 minutes to soften, squeezing it with a spoon often. Cut the herring into slices, cut the cucumber into slices and halve the mushrooms. Place all the ingredients in a bowl; add the onion. In a separate bowl, mix the ketchup, mustard, oil and garlic crushed in a juicer until smooth. Season with pepper and sugar (the sauce should be sweet). Pour the finished sauce over the remaining ingredients and mix. Set aside in the refrigerator overnight.
